At Neuron Immigration Solutions, many Temporary Graduate (subclass 485)/subclass 600 visa holders ask us:

“Can I apply for a student visa (subclass 500) while I’m still in Australia?”

Schedule 1 Restriction in Migration Regulations 1994
Schedule 1 of the Migration Regulations 1994 outlines the requirements for a valid visa application. It includes criteria that determine whether an applicant can lodge a subclass 500 student visa application from within Australia.

If you are currently holding a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)/visitor visa subclass 600 without no further stay condition, you may not meet the Schedule 1 criteria for an onshore student visa application. This means your application would be considered invalid if submitted from inside Australia.

This rule often surprises applicants. Even though the 485 visa does not have a “No Further Stay” condition, it still does not satisfy the specific Schedule 1 requirements to lodge a student visa onshore.

What Can You Do Instead?
The good news is — you can still apply for a student visa from offshore. Here’s how the process generally works:

✅ Obtain your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from an approved education provider
✅ Prepare your application documents – including GS statement, financial evidence, OSHC, etc.
✅ Travel overseas temporarily – many students choose nearby destinations like New Zealand, Indonesia, or return to their home country
✅ Lodge your subclass 500 visa while offshore
✅ Come back to Australia (Note you must have valid 485 visa to return back)
✅ Before your 485 ceases apply bridging A by linking your offshore student visa.
✅ Wait for a decision.

RISK
If your student visa gets refused, then it cannot be reviewed by ART, you need legal help with immigration lawyers
